DG Mare / EAFE Conference on “Economic Advice in Fisheries Management: a trilogue between science, administration and stakeholders”, MALTA 2016

In the context of its collaboration with the European Association of Fisheries Economists, the European Commission organized in May 2015 a conference in Malta focusing on Economic Advice in Fisheries Management and the trilogue between scientists, administration and stakeholders.

Recognizing the evolution of the fisheries sector in the past decades and the rapid addition of new stakeholders to the field, this conference seeked to generate economic advice for the future of the industry. Debates and round tables were held  about the economic evaluation of ecosystems services, global drivers, sustainable fisheries, NTM measures, etc... About 50 posters were also presented during the event.

All presentatinons and recordings are available through the website of the Conference here :

For SUCCESS, the Conference was considered as a unique opportunity to present and to be educated with some key developments for the SUCCESS project : Global Drivers, Non-Tariff Measures, International Competitiveness, Regulations, Innovations, …

It was an opportunity to meet some stakeholders / colleagues, including from the DG Mare / DG Trade (Discussion with Xavier Guillou regarding the access of Eumofa data; with Farnet – Serge Gomes Da Silva- regarding the work on tourism attractiveness; poster by Nicolas Dross on Trade issues).

During the Conference, some stakeholders of particular interest for the whole project and specific activities (Workshop / Focus Group/ Case studies) were met and invited to the SUCCESS stakeholder meeting organized on Friday afternoon, including:

  • Giampaolo Buonfiglio, representative of the RACMED/MEDAC and Associazione Generale Cooperative Italiane (AGCI AGRITAL)
  • Daniel Voces De Onaindi, Europeche
  • Jeremy Percy (Low Impact Fishers of Europe - LIFE)
  • Guus Pastoor (AIP-CE)
  • Griffin Carpenter (New Economic Foundation)

While it was not possible for some of them to attend due to timing issues, the Conference was an occasion to start collaboration and exchanges. Besides, SUCCESS was invited by Giampaolo Buonfiglio to attend the next executive committee of MEDAC on June 7th, 2016.
